Course Policy
The Uechi-Ryu Karate Club accepts new members at any point during the Semester! Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff and even
individuals not affiliated with Virginia Tech may join at any time. If you wish to attend a class, please send an email
to the Instructor (e-mail listed at the bottom of the site) and let him/her know you are coming!
We require dues of $15 a semester, paid by the third class. The first two classes can be attended without payment of dues. This is to provide people with a sort of 'trial period' in which to decide whether our style and club is right for them. Please feel free to ask questions at any time regarding the organization and Karate!
A Rank Promotion Test (RPT) is held at the end of every semester. If an individual has progressed enough during the semester, he/she will be invited to test at the RPT for a rank promotion. Test invitations are given based on skill level, amount of improvement during the semester, effort, class attendance, and leadership.
This class deals moderately with sport sparring where individuals use techniques to score points on their opponent. While protective gear is always used, there is still a chance for injury and therefore all individuals
wishing to participate in the class will be required to fill out a waiver (which is part of the Confidential Evaluation
Sheet). Note that this is *not* 'fighting'. We treat sparring as a friendly sport, and the instructor will only allow someone to spar other people if he/she demonstrates control and good sportsmanship.
A note to prospective members with past martial arts experience: In order to maintain a safe environment, all
joining members, regardless of past experience, will undergo monitored and slow progression for the first couple months.
This means: do not expect to join this club and begin full contact sparring and advanced drills from day one. A
strong emphasis will be placed on the basics and sparring will start with beginner drills and progress as the instructor
sees fit.
